Odontogenic cysts Flashcards
what is a cyst
pathological cavity having fluid or semi-fluid content
what is a cyst lined by
wholly or part by epithelium
2 main classifications of cysts of the jaws
Odontogenic
Non-odontogenic
what does odontogenic mean
derived from epithelial residues of tooth forming organ
what does non odontogenic mean
derived from sources other than tooth forming organ
2 types of odontogenic cysts
inflammatory
developmental
4 layers of enamel organ
inner enamel epithelium
outer enamel epithelium
stellate reticulum
stratum intermedium
types of inflammatory odontogenic cysts
radicular cyst
inflammatory collateral cyst
what is the most common type of jaw cyst
radicular cyst
Clinical features of radicular cyst
- slow growing swelling
- often no symptoms
- must be associated with a non vital tooth
- typically well circumscribed unilocular radiolucent lesion seen at apex
radicular cyst tx
- small cysts - rct/ xla/ periradicular surgery
- enucleation
- marsupialisation for large lesions
types of radicular cysts
lateral radicular cyst
residual cyst
what is a lateral radicular cyst
radicular cyst arising from a lateral root canal branch of a non vital tooth
what is a residual cyst
radicular cyst that persists after extraction of the associated non vital tooth
2 variants of inflammatory collateral cysts
- paradental cyst (lower 8s)
- mandibular buccal bifurcation cyst (lower 6s and 7s)
