What is OCD
Occurrence of unwanted and intrusive obsessive or distressing images usually accompanied by compulsive behaviours
What are obsessions
Persistent and recurrent intrusive thoughts, Images or impulses that are experienced as disturbing, inappropriate and uncontrollable
What are some examples of obsessions
Contamination fears, fears of harming oneself or others, lack of symmetry, pathological doubt which is a common need for symmetry having things exactly right. Tried to resist a neutralizing with thought or action
What are compulsions
Repeated behaviour that are performed as lengthy rituals (can be mental rituals too)
What are examples of compulsions
Cleaning, checking, repeating, ordering in arranging, accounting, praying

To reduce stress or prevent a dreaded event or situation

Require that compulsions and obsessions take at least one hour per day

Neutral stimuli become associated with fearful thoughts through classical conditioning. For example, touching and door knob, shaking hands might be associated with the scary idea contamination. Once making this association they may find the anxiety produced by shaking hands is reduced by handwashing so the washing is reinforced
