What are the two elements of compulsions?
Compulsions are repetitive- eg repeat hand washing
Compulsions reduce anxiety- eg. Washing hands to reduce anxiety of phobia of germs
What is meant by avoidance? (Example pls)
Eg. Washing hands frequently to avoid germs. This can lead to avoidance of emptying the bins or leaving the house etc..
List the three emotional characteristics of OCD
Anxiety and distress- obsessions are unpleasant
Accompanying depression- compulsive behaviour can reduce this
Guilt and disgust- at self or something external eg. Dirt
List the three cognitive characteristics of OCD
Obsessive thoughts- eg. Worried about being contaminated with germs etc..
