Burnout
An aversive emotional state that is thought to be the result of job stress. It is characterized by a lack of enthusiasm for the job and a lost sense of importance of the job.
Bullying
A pattern of abusive behavior directed toward one or more individuals
Carpal tunnel syndrome
A repetitive strain injury of the wrist brought on by continually performing the same motions
Decibel
A measure of sound intensity
Demand/Control Model
A model of job stress that suggests how control can reduce the negative effects of job stressors .
Incivility
Rude and demeaning behavior when often the intention of the actor is ambiguous; a mild form of mobbing or bullying.
Flextime
A work schedule that allows employees to choose some of their work hours.
Job strain
A physical or psychological reaction to a job stressor
Job Stressor
A stressful job condition.
Mobbing
Occurs when one or more employees harass and mistreat a particular individual at work; similar to bullying
Musculoskeletal disorders
An injury to the muscles, bones, and connective tissue caused by an acute episode (lifting) or repetitive strain.
Occupational Health Psychology (OHP)
An interdisciplinary subfield of psychology concerned with employee health, safety, and well-being.
Repetitive Strain Injuries
An injury brought on by making the same motion continuously, such as typing on a computer keyboard.
Role Ambiguity
Employee uncertainty about what is expected from him or her on the job
Role conflict
Incompatible demands placed on an employee
