Occupational Adaptation Model Flashcards
What is occupational adaptation?
A comprehensive systems model that is based on core concepts and constructs reflective of OT practice.
Occupational adaptation can be described as consisting of two components. What are they?
- Framework that describes a normal human phenomenon called adaptation.
- Framework that allows occupational therapists to plan, guide, and implement interventions.
What is adaptive capacity?
A person’s ability to recognize the need for change, modification, or refinement (adaptation) in order to achieve relative mastery.
According to this model, every person is made up of three parts. What are they?
- Sensorimotor
- Cognitive
- Psychosocial.
What is occupational challenge?
Whenever a person participates in an occupation, he is naturally challenged to meet various expectations of performance.
What is occupational role functioning influenced by?
- Every person has an internal perception of why one should act a certain way, which contributes to personal satisfaction.
- Every environment also has a set of social and cultural norms that define how one should act in order to fit in.
According to this model, when facing an occupational challenge, the person calls upon 3 subprocesses. What are they?
- The adaptive response generation subprocess
- The adaptive response evaluation subprocess
- The adaptive response integration subprocess
What is this model’s distinctive contribution to OT practice?
It explains how one’s adaptive capacity can impact occupational performance successfully or unsuccessfully, drawing a practitioner’s attention to faulty processes within this cycle as opposed to faulty people.
What does this process require?
A high-cognitive understanding by the practitioner.
