OCB02-1006 Suture Development Flashcards
What proportion of the head is the newborn face?
1/8th of the head
By adulthood what proportion of the head is the face?
It is about 1/2
What joints form between the skull bones?
sutures
What are fontanelles?
The membrane covered spots in the calvaria where three or more bones converge
What are the four fontenelles?
Anterior fontanelle
Posterior fontanelle
Sphenoidal fontanelle
Mastoid fontanelle
What does the continuous growth of the skull reliant on?
The sutures remaining patent (open and unfused)
What is craniosynostosis?
The premature fusion of cranial sutures
In what way as sutures ‘tension adapted’?
The growth of the brain pushes the skull bones out; this results in tension at the sutures
The tension induces new bone growth
What are the effects of craniosyntosis?
Assymmetry and raised eyebrow
What is used to expand the palate?
Force applied using an expansion screw can separate the two halves of the maxillary complex
Tension induced bone growth and deposition at the inter maxillary/ palatine suture results in maxillary expansion
