In relation to ALIBI witnesses what considerations need to be addressed by OC suspects?
Make inquiries of people other than the person whose particulars have been supplied to confirm or rebut evidence in support of the other alibi.
Complete inquiries to establish where the suspect was at the time of the offence who they were with what they were doing
Where ever possible corporation of the alibi provided by the suspect should be sought from the forensics other sources that are independent of the suspect.
What point should An OC suspects cover during the briefing?
Circumstances of the offence including an analysis of the scene and witness evidence available.
full details of all persons of interest and any suspect where the ID of suspects are known.
Details of any description of the suspect provided by witnesses.
Whether any particular modus operandi have been identified
Describe the role of OC suspects?
Responsible for supervising the members of the suspects team for the purpose of;
Obtaining information about suspects and persons of interest and they are identified by the OC investigation.
The profiling and investigating all suspects and persons of interest to enable the OC investigation to establish their involvement in the offence or eliminate them from the inquiry
Seeking evidence to cover all ingredients of the offence.
Mitigating and dealing with possible defences that may be raised where appropriate.
Providing a basis for further investigation.
A doctor can assist by providing what information to police in relation to a suspect or suspects?
Note any injuries (bruising or scratches)
Take samples as necessary (blood, saliva, head hair, pubic/body hair , fingernail scrapings, swabs of suspects hands or relevant areas)
Swab hands for firearm residue
Provided a professional opinion regarding the condition of the suspect
“record any comments (offence, cause of injury) photos of any marks or injuries”
What is the process around the setting priorities for the OC suspects?
Investigate all suspects thoroughly in order priority as decided in consultation with the OC investigation. Aspects that may influence the setting of priorities are relative weight of evidence against a person or likelihood of their leaving the area. You may also be influenced by particular urgency in solving the case or the availability of staff.
