What action should OC body take after the PM in relation to exhibits?
OC body must take possession of all exhibits including all Sample’s and specialist kits.
Any wet or damp exhibits must be unsealed and dried in a controlled environment such as police drying room with due regard for integrity of the exhibit.once dry they can be repackaged and resealed.
What is the responsibility of the OC body in relation to exhibits?
OC body is responsible for recording, labelling, packaging, sealing and securing all physical exhibits relating to the body, Including samples taken during the PM. All exhibits must be packaged and sealed before leaving the mortuary without exception and will be recorded in the scene exhibit schedule.
What is the procedure around taking notes during a p.m.?
OC body must not make any notes of discussions concerning the PM examination, unless specifically directed to buy the OC investigation and/or the pathologist.
The pathologist can provide what types of information in relation to skeletal remains?
Whether the remains are actually bones
Whether the bones are human
Age, gender, height in the race of the person
Give some examples of methods used to ID the body when visual ID is not possible?
Fingerprints, D in a profiling, dental records available through the region forensic dentistry advisor, Eye exam records, medical exam records scars, birth marks, implants, x-rays surgical wounds, amputations, personal effects, facial reconstruction
What duties should OC body adhere to when arriving at the mortuary?
Ensure mortuary staff do not wash the body
Ensure the body is labelled and secured in mortuary fridge
Retain any key used to secure body until it is required for the p.m.
Ensure the body remains in its present condition until the commencement of the p.m.
Arrange formal ID of the body
Who are the persons that may attend a p.m.?
Pathologist, coroner, any other pathologist assisting, doctor who treated the deceased, Dr nurse or funeral director representing the deceased, Dr representing the interests of a suspect, police, any other person authorised by the coroner
Who are the people that should attend a post-mortem?
OC investigation, the body, member specifically designated as exhibits officer 4 PM, police photographer, Soco or fingerprints officer, pathologist.
What is the purpose of a post-mortem examination?
To establish the cause of death
Other information that a pathologist may provide includes?
Determining where possible the mode and time of death
Establishing how injuries or events at the scene may have contributed to wards the death of the victim
Determining the nature and size of any weapons used
Determining the approximate height and stature of the suspect
Providing areas of interest for subsequent interviews of witnesses and/orsuspects
Negating any possible defences
Identifying the victim ID has not been established
What are some considerations for the OC investigation when appointing an OC body?
The OC body should be an experienced investigator with awareness of forensic issues. When this is not possible the OC body may require additional support and all mentoring.
