Two main categories of sources of weather data?
Federal - FAA and NWS
commercial - basically take info from FAA/NWS and repackage it
Does using weather info from commercial providers as opposed to federal info satisfy the preflight action required by 91.103?
Neither yes or no. FAA says just be aware that it may not meet FAA/NWS quality control standards. When in doubt, contact FSS!
What types of weather briefing services are available with FSS?

What is a flight information services-broadcast (FIS-B)
ground broadcast service provided though the automatic dependent surveillance broadcast (ADS-B) services. Provides crew with flight deck display of aviation weather and aeronautical info
Can FIS-B be useful in navigating around a thunderstrom?
It is not real time info. It is updated every 5 minutes to 15 minutes. Not appropriate for tactical avoidance of severe weather
What is an ATIS?
Automatic Terminal Information Service - continuous broadcast of recorded non-control info. Improves controller effectiveness and relieves frequency congestion by automating the repetitive transmission of essential but routine info.
What is provided in an ATIS?
weather, ceiling, visibility, obstructions to visibility, temp, dew point, wind, altimeter, other pertinent remarks, instrument approach and runway in use
How can you obtain weather in the air?
FSS on 122.2 and other RCO frequencies
