What type of outdoor activities are ok for women who are pregnant?
What activities should be avoided?
generally safe and encouraged
avoid hyperthermia, dehydration, and maternal trauma - avoid activities at high risk for falling, abdominal trauma, scuba diving
Why should pregnant women get up and move frequently on long flights?
because they are at higher risk for blood clots (decreased venous stasis)
You’re spending the night at a campsite with your friends. One of them is six months
pregnant, and throughout the evening, she starts to have abdominal pain.
What should she do?
Under what conditions would you advise her to leave and go to the hospital?
rest and hydration
if the pain persists or worsens advise to leave and go to the hospital or evacuate if severe
What should you do and not do when assisting with a delivery outside of the hospital?
do not encourage pushing
minimize manipulation of the fetus
flex mother’s thighs to chest
gently clear infant’s nose and mouth after delivery
do not pull on the umbilical cord
What are the signs of a possible ectopic pregnancy? What should you specifically ask?
signs: sharp, lower abdominal pain, sometimes vaginal bleeding
ask: about last menstrual period (6-8 weeks prior?)
any concern about this should lead to immediate evacuation
When should someone with a urinary tract infection (UTI) be evacuated?
pain in lower back or symptoms persist for greater than 48 hour despite antibiotics
What should you do if someone develops testicular torsion?
untwist it immediately
