How can you deter a grizzly bear attack? What should you do once it’s attacking?
deter
line up side by side (3-5 feet apart, make the group look like one large object)
Yell “hey bear” or other things to let it know you’re not another animal - end its curiosity quickly
be prepared with bear spray

do not make any sudden moves
do not act aggressively
stand your ground but be submissive
if attacked get into the fetal position with your head and neck protected
if rolled onto your back, protect your face with your elbows
What should you do if a black bear attacks?

continue to fight and kick again the bear as much as possible (aim at the face, eyes, nose)
What should you do if a mountain lion attacks?
scared off by aggressive behavior
face it, talk very loudly, and make yourself appear as a threat
fight back with rocks, sticks, and bare fists
do not turn and run away from a mountain lion
if you have small children, pick them up
What are the symptoms of venomous poisoning?
swelling; pain; tingling at bite site; metallic taste in mouth; fever; chills; nausea; vomiting; blurred vision; muscle tremors
What should you do if someone is bitten by a snake? What shouldn’t you do?

no, most result in local pain and inflammation
bark scorpion (AZ, NM and parts of NV) sting is the exception
How should you remove ticks?
use fingers or tweezers to grab tick as close to the skin surface as possible
pull the tick straight upward with steady, even pressure
What types of animal bites should you always evacuate for rabies prophylaxis?
raccoon, bat, skunk, dog
