observations Flashcards
what is a participant observation
observations in natural situations where observer interacts directly with ppsq
strengths
researcher develops a relationship with group under study and therefore can gain a greater understanding of groups behaviour
weaknesses of pp observation
researcher loses objectivity becoming part of the group and pps may act differently if they know researcher amongst them
what is a non-pp observation
when observer observes without getting involved, researcher can remain objective throughout study
- reseacher loses a sense of group dynamic by staying separate
what are natural observations
where researcher exercises control over some aspects of env in which observation is made
unobtrusive
strengths of natural experiments
- pps unaware they are being observed, behave naturally
- provides richer and fuller info
- easier to generalise to real life
- works well with children and animals who don’t know how to follow instructions
