Observational Learning Flashcards
What is observational learning?
when a person learns by watching the behaviour and consequence of a model’s actions
What is social learning?
process where social influences impact a person’s thoughts, feelings and behaviour
What is modelling?
when the observer/learner demonstrates the observed behaviour
Who is the scientist associated with observational learning?
Bandura
What are the 5 elements of observational learning?
- attention
- retention
- reproduction
- motivation
- reinforcement
What occurs in attention?
observer must pay close attention to the behaviour of the model and the consequences
What happens in retention?
learnt behaviour must be stored in memory
What occurs in reproduction?
observer must have the physical capabilities to execute the modeled behaviour
What occurs in motivation?
learner must want to perform the learned behaviour
What occurs in reinforcement?
influences the likelihood of a behaviour to occur
- if the behaviour is reinforced = more likely to be performed
- if the behaviour is punished = less likely to be performed
What is the Bobo-Doll experiment?
was the imitation of aggressive behaviour in children
- children watched punishment given for aggressive behaviour
- watched reinforcement given for aggressive behaviour
- watched the aggressive behaviour have no consequence
What were the results of the experiment?
- children who observed reinforcement = demonstrated aggressive behaviour
- children who observed punishment = less likely to perform aggressive behaviour
What is the social learning theory?
proposes that learning also occurs through direct observation or observational learning
- suggests that people can learn through observing the behaviours of others
