Areas of the brain involved in memory and learning Flashcards
What is the cerebral cortex?
thin outer layer of neural tissue that covers the outside of the brain
What is the role of the cerebral cortex?
stores long term explicit and implicit memories throughout the cortex
- only stores episodic, semantic and procedural memories
What is the hippocampus?
located in the temporal lobe and is connected with the amygdala
What is the role of the hippocampus?
consolidates long term explicit memories
- helps transfer memories from STM to LTM
- (semantic and episodic memories)
- also involves spatial memory
What is the amygdala?
located just above the hippocampus in the temporal lobe
What is the role of the amygdala?
involved in the formation of emotional memories + fear based responses
- includes implicit memories = classically conditioned responses
- processes our emotional responses
- consolidation of explicit memories with emotional content
What is the cerebellum?
located at the base and rear end of the brain
What does the cerebellum do?
- involved in learning and performing motor skills
- encoding and storage of implicit memories (procedural and classically conditioned memories)
What does the amgydala not do?
store emotional memories
What does not the hippocampus not do?
doesn’t store any long term memories
What happens if the amygdala is damaged?
unable to develop fear responses
What happens if the hippocampus is damaged?
can still learn procedural memories but won’t remember the declarative part (personal experience) of how they learnt it
