Observational Learning Flashcards
Observational learning
Where a person learns by watching the behaviour demonstrated by another.
Modeling
Tendency for a person to copy the behaviour or attitude that is demonstrated by another person
Process of observational learning - ARRMR
Attention Retention Reproduction Motivation Reinforcement
ARRMR - A
Attention
Focus on distinctive features of models behaviour
ARRMR - First R
Retention
Need to be able to remember models behaviour
ARRMR - Second R
Reproduction
Must be capable of imitating the behaviour
ARRMR - M
Motivation
Needs to be an incentive to imitate behaviour
ARRMR - Third R
Must be some reward for modeling behaviour (either internal satisfaction, external reinforcement or vicarious reinforcement)
Factors that make a model more likely to be modeled
- model is liked
- high status
- similar to ourselves (age, sex)
- familiar to us (behaviour stands out clearly and we can imagine being able to copy the behaviour)
Vicarious Conditioning
Learning indirectly from watching another persons conditioning
Vicarious reinforcement
Model is rewarded for their behaviour. Increases likelihood that models behavior will be copied
Vicarious punishment
Model is punished for their behaviour. Decreases likelihood that’s models behaviour will be copied
