Objects Flashcards
What is a predicate?
A Predicate is the completer of a sentence. The subject names the “do-er” or “be-er” of the sentence; the predicate does the rest of the work.
What is a simple predicate made of?
A simple predicate consists of only a verb, verb string, or compound verb.
“The glacier melted.”
“The glacier has been melting.”
“The glacier melted, broke apart, and slipped into the sea.”
What is a compound predicate made of?
Two or more simple predicates combined.
“The glacier began to slip down the mountainside and eventually crushed some of the village’s outlying buildings.”
What does a complete predicate consist of?
All the words in a sentence or clause except the subject and words that describe the subject.
With an intransitive verb, what is included in the predicate?
Objects and complements: “The glacier is melting.”
With a transitive verb, what is said to be part of the predicate?
Object, and Object Complements: The slow moving glacier wiped out an entire forest. It gave the villagers lots of problems.”
With a linking verb the subject is connected to what?
The subject complement
“The mayor doesn’t feel good.”
What does a predicate adjective do?
It follows a linking verb and tells us something about the subject: “Ramonita is beautiful.”
“His behavior has been outrageous.”
What does a predicate nominative do?
A predicate nominative follows a linking verb and tells us what the subject is: “Dr. Couchworthy is acting president of the university.” “She used to be the tallest girl on the team.”
What is a direct object?
A direct object is the receiver of action within a sentence, as in “He hit the ball.” Be careful to distinguish between a direct object and an object complement.
What is an object complement?
Object complements are nouns or adjectives that complete the meaning of the verb & rename/describe the direct object.
“They named their daughter Natasha.”
Daughter is the direct object & Natasha is the object complement.
What is an indirect object
An indirect object identifies to or for whom or what the action of the verb is performed.
“Grandfather left Rosalita and Raoul all his money.”
The word me (and similar other object-form pronouns such as him, us, them) is not always what? And can sometimes serve as what?
They are not always an indirect object and can sometimes serve as a direct object.
“Bless me/her/us.”
“Call me/him/them if you have questions.”
Do pronouns change when they are changed from subject form to object form to possessive form?
Yes.
His [Possessive]
Him [Objective]
He [Subjective]
What is a complement?
A complement is any word or phrase that completes the sense of a subject, object, or a verb.
