Objective Complements Flashcards
What is an objective complement?
An objective complement is a N/PRO/ADJ that helps complete the meaning of a transitive verb by identifying or modifying the direct object.
What is the formula for an objective complement?
N/PRO(subj) + V/VP + Who/what? = DO to/for
whom/what? (N/PRO) = IO
or what? (N,PRO,ADJ) = OC
Tips for identifying objective complements…
A sentence can’t have an IO and an OC.
Objective complements modify DOs with N/PRO/ADJ.
Maybe compound or multiple OCs in a sentence.
Always after DO.
Not all verbs take an OC.
Explain syntax change with objective complements.
The OC may PRECEDE the subject, verb and DO when the syntax is changed. The syntax is an exclamation point or a question mark, the order of the parts of speech is mixed.
ex. What an exciting adventure (OC) our science teacher made the field trip!
