What is a declarative statement?

A

Makes a statement and ends with a period.

Ex. Volleyball is not offered to girls.

What is an interrogative sentence?

A

Asks a question and ends with a question mark.

Ex. What is the fastest route? (asking for info)
What is homework due next class?
Non Ex. Was a fast route you took!

What is an imperative sentence?

A

Makes a request or gives a command. Most imperative sentences end with a period. A strong command ends with an exclamation point.

Ex. Can you pass the salad? (mild command with “can you”)
Please pass the salad (request)
Call this number incase of an emergency (mild command)
Watch out! (strong command)

The SUBJ of an imperative sentence is always understood to be you, although you may not appear in the sentence.

What is an exclamatory sentence?

A

Shows the excitement or expresses strong feeling and ends with an exclamation point.

Ex. What a great singer she is!
Ah, you have discovered the secret!
Ouch! That really hurts!
