OBJ - Molecules of Life Flashcards
1
Q
List the 6 basic molecules of life
A
1) Water 2) Proteins 3) Nucleic Acids 4) Carbs 5) Lipids 6) Vitamins/Minerals
2
Q
What defines aromaticity & why is it important in BIOCHEM
A
- Planar, cyclic, conjugated =, special stability due to delocalization of e-‘s -Hockey puck shape allows for base stacking – hydrophobic faces with polar h-bonding edges
3
Q
Reactions
Dehydration (forward) —->
<——–Hydrolyis (reverse)
A
4
Q
Oxidation/Reduction of Carbon Atoms/Fuctional Groups
A
5
Q
Lipid definition & Triglyceride structure
A
- Lipids are biomolecules that are more soluble in an organic solvent than in water
- Triglyceride = Glycerol back bone = ester linkages + 3 FA chains
- When unsaturated (C=C present), trans configuartion allows for better stacking; cis kinks the chain & has steric hindrance -> steroids come & snuggle in the gaps
- “Omega 3’s”: Omega refers to the last C so it’s be 3rd C from the end of the chain
6
Q
Steroids
A
- Steroid backbone = 4 C ring structrue, not Ar
- Sterold = steroid with OH group tail, making it amphipathic
- ex: Cholesterol
- Steroids can easily diffuse through lipid bilayer
- Integral part to membrane fluidity
7
Q
Sugars:
Aldose & Ketose
Glucose
D & L Configuration rules
A
5 Carbons COOH
Glucose is a hexose
The C between the 2 Oxygens = C1
O-C-O
