OBJ 3.3 Flashcards
Analyze graphical representations regarding site analysis and site programming
Retention Pond
Low-lying area designed to hold water for long periods.
Detention Pond
Low-lying area designed to temporarily hold water, often used as a means of flood control near large areas of non-porous surfaces (e.g., a large parking lot).
Graphic Representation of Swale/Valley
A length of depression in the land without flowing water that is typically vegetated and can be seasonally wet. Graphically, the contours point up toward the higher elevation.
Graphic Representation of Crown/Ridge
Elevated portion of land from which water flows down. Graphically, the contours point down toward the lower elevation.
Contour Interval
Represents the change in elevation between two contours. Larger scales have smaller intervals, and smaller scales have larger intervals for clarity of drawings.
Local Road
Low-capacity road with direct access to site.
Collector Road
Connection road between local and arterial streets.
Arterial Road
Wide-capacity street, usually connecting to an expressway.
Expressway
Limited-access road with high speed and high volume circulation.
What is the difference between a swale and a crown? Identify the corresponding contour representation.
Swale is a low tract of land, often marshy, that is important for irrigation. Crown is a raised area, often referring to the high point of a road or field for proper water drainage.
