location of differentiation in decision-making (flat vs tall). Hierarchy of managers

Hierarchy (communication)–> Structural Linking Mechanisms (teams) –> reward and control systems (checklist and coordination between teams)–> informal mechanisms –> IT

Based heavily on the function of putting out product

- Gets the product out the door
- Minimal Conflict if one manager is in charge

- Can be inefficient in duplication of efforts
- conflict of agencies
