What is LEPTIN???? How does it WORK???

A

*SATIETY hormone that works in the hypothalamus & produced in fat cells.
- Obesity cause decreased Leptin sensitivity bc there’s just so much made, body just becomes resistant to it

  4. Waist circumference:
    - Measure with arms straight down, measure at elbow joint!

  1. SLEEP APNEA testing (overnight sleep study):
    - Obesity cause it
    - Increase risk for HTN and Type II
    - Use CPAP to help w/ sleeping

  2. DIABETES screen (HgbA1C)
  3. DYSLIPIDEMIA testing
  4. THYROID evaluation
  5. LIVER function test
  6. 24hr urine for free CORTISOL (for cushing syndrome)

SYMPATHOMIMETIC – mimics the SNS!
1. Phendimetrazine, Dietthylpropion, Benzphetamine, and Phentermine
-Anorexogenic effect, and Increased satiety
A. Common adverse effects:
1. Insomnia
2. Irritability
3. Headache
4. Dry mouth
B. Contraindications: Cardiovascular disease, Hyperthyroidism, Arrhythmias, Agitation, Insomnia, and Glaucoma
C. Caution with HYPERTENSION!!!!!!
