- Person issuing order is usually a figure of authority who has power to punish when obedient behaviour isn’t forthcoming

A
- 40 American men volunteered
- Study was supposedly on memory
- When volunteer arrived the were introduced to another participant (confederate of Milgram)
- Drew lots to see who would be teacher (T) and learner (L)
- Draw was fixed so that participant was always teacher
- An experimenter was also involved (Another confederate dressed in grey lab coat)
- Study aimed to asses obedience in situation where authority figure (experimenter) ordered participant (teacher) to give increasingly shock to a learner located in a different room
- Shocks were fake but teacher didn’t know this
