Nutrition and Digestion Flashcards
What is a suspension feeder?
capture food particles from the surrounding
ex: whale shark
What is a substrate feeder?
live in or on their food source and eat their way through it
ex: caterpillar and maggots
What is a fluid feeder?
suck nutrient-rich fluids from a living host
ex: mosquito
What is a bulk feeder?
ingest large pieces of food
ex: cow, humans
What are the four stages food is processed?
- ingestion
- digestion
- absorption
- excretion
What are proteins broken down into?
amino acids
What are polysaccharides and disaccharides broken down into?
monosaccharides
What are nucleic acids broken down into?
nucleotides
How do sponges and protists digest food?
in vacuoles
What specialized organs (two) do earthworms and birds have in their digestive system?
crop and gizzard
Function of salivary glands
secrete a mucus and salivary amylase to begin the digestion of starch and glycongen
Function of the liver
secretes bile to aid in the breakdown of fats
Function of the gall bladder
stores bile from the liver, releases small amount of bile into the small intestine as needed
Function of the pancreas
double function
1. secretes amylases, proteases, lipases, and nucleases for digestion, bicarbonate to neutralize acidic mixtures from stomach
2. secretes insulin and glucagon for regulation of blood sugar
where do mechanical and chemical digestion start?
in the mouth
