Gas Exchange Flashcards
What are the 3 phases of gas exchange in humas?
- breathing
- transport of gases
- exchange of gases with body cells
What do gills do?
absorb O2 dissolved in water
What is ventilation?
flow of water or air over the respiratory surface
What is countercurrent exchange?
transfer of a substance such as oxygen between two fluids flowing in the opposite direction
What temperature of water holds more O2?
cold water
Does still or moving water hold more O2?
moving water holds more O2
Does salt or fresh water hold more O2?
fresh water holds more O2
What are the 2 major advantages to breathing air?
- air has a higher concentration of O2 then water
- air is lighter and easier to move then water
What is the purpose of the diphragm?
-separates the abdominal cavity and the thoracic cavity
-helps ventilate the lungs
When air is inhaled what happens to it in the nasal cavity?
-filtered by hairs
-warmed and humidified
-sampled for odors
What is the process of respiration in mammals?
- nasal cavity
- pharynx
- larynx
- trachea
- bronchi
- bronchioles
- alveoli
What is the purpose of the secretions called surfactants?
prevents alveoli from sticking shut
What type of tissue is alveoli?
simple squamous epithelium
What is negative pressure breathing?
a system in which air is pulled into the lungs
