1) weight for height: >2SD
2) BMI >95th centile for age and sex

An obese child is at risk of

  • hypertension
  • DM
  • slipped capital femoral epiphysis
  • blount disease, a cause of bow leg
  • sleep apnea and CO2 retention ( Pickwick syndrome)
  • psycological disorders such as low self esteem

  • severe acute malnutrition (absence of ascites)
  • nephrotic syndrome (presence of ascites)
