Nutrients Flashcards
What are 3 Macronutrients?
- Carbs
- Protein
- Fats
What are 2 Micronutrients?
- Vitamens
- Minerals
what are protines made up of?
Amino acids
Protine from food is broken down into Amino acids and then reformed into
what is a carbohydrate?
are the body’s primary energy source, providing the body with kilojules to support physical activity and bodily processes
Kilojule - are a measure of the energy value of foods
simple - table sugar, honey, syrups complex - fruits, vegetables, beans
What’s fibre
is an idigestable form of complex carbohydrate that cannot be broken down and absorbed by the body and is found in foods of plant origin
Fruit, whole grain products, nuts and seeds and legumes
What’s protein
is a substance that functions to build, maintain and replace body cells, it’s made up of amino acids
what are fats?
are energy dense food molecules that have a variety of functions based on their chemical compisition
what are some health impacts of Fats?
- increasing cholestoral
- atherosclerosis
- incresed risk of cardiovascular disease
Underconsumption of iron can lead to…
-iron deficiency - not enough haemoglobin (protein in red blood cells that carries oxgrn through the body.)
-iron deficiency anemia - not enough oxygen in the blood from not enough red blood cells
what can the underconsumption of fruits and vegetables do to a persons health?
leads to the underconsumption of
- soluble fibres - which can lead to obesity as well as type 2 diabetes and cardivascular disease
- insouluble fibre- constapation and colorectal cancer (cancer in the colon or rectum)
- water- dehydration
what are the major nutriets for health and welbeing?
- Carbohydrates
- Protein
- Fats
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Water
What does overconsumption of sodium do?
increases blood volume, which is a risk for hypertension which contributes to cardiovascular. disease, including heart attacks and stokes
