Nutrient Utilization Flashcards
Nutrition
the study of the processes where feed nutrients are presented to and utilized by living cells for productive processes
What are the three types of animal experiments used to determine nutrient utilization in animals?
- feeding experiment
- digestion experiment
- metabolism experiment
How is a feeding experiment carried out?
- feed the feedstuff/nutrient
- compare with a standard source or control
- measure the production response
What can we learn from a feeding experiment?
- will they consume it?
- How well do animals perform on the feed?
How is a digestion experiment carried out?
- feed the feedstuff/nutrient
- sample feed and collect feces
- analyze the feed and feces
- calculate the apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC)
How is the apparent digestibility coefficient calculated?
ADC = ((intake-fecal)/(intake)) *100
What can a digestion experiment tell us?
nutrient absorption in the GI tract but NOT how it is utilized
How is a metabolism experiment carried out?
- feed the feedstuff/nutrient
- sample the feed and collect the feces
- analyze the feed/feces
- collect the urine and analyze it
- calculate the nutrient balance
How do you calculate the apparent nutrient balance or retention?
ANB = (((intake - (fecal + urine))/ intake)*100
What does a metabolism experiment tell us?
determines nutrient retention
What is the difference between true and apparent digestibility?
apparent digestibility does not account for endogenous materials in the feces (cast off cells, microbes, etc)

include an ingredients list
analyze the diet
does NOT answer: will the animal consume it, is it digestible, and is it utilized
