nutrient cycling Flashcards
1
Q
what are autotrophic organisms?
A
make their own food using solar energy or chemical energy
2
Q
what is the nitrogen cycle?
A
- nitrogen in atmosphere (N2) is fixed in the soil by bacteria
- N2 is converted to ammonium
- ammonium undergoes nitrification by bacteria
- ammonium becomes nitrites (NO2-)
- nitrifying bacteria transforms nitrites into nitrates (NO3-)
- nitrates are assimilated in plants to create amino/nucleic acids or they undergo denitrification (by bacteria) and go back in the atmosphere as N2
- animals consume those plants
- both plants and animals die and become nitrogen-containing organic compounds
- decomposers do ammonification to create ammonium
3
Q
what is the Haber-Bosch process?
A
take N2 and turn it into ammonia that acts as a fertilizer
4
Q
what is Liebig’s Law of the Minimum?
A
biological growth is controled by the availability of the scarcest resource (limiting factor)
5
Q
what is are the two most common limiting factors in terrestrial systems?
A
water (stops photosynthesis) + nitrogen
6
Q
what is often the limiting factor in lakes?
A
phosphorus
