Nursing Urinary Patient Flashcards
What ‘normals’ info could you ask an owner in terms of urination?
- ground preference/ litter preference?
- preferred posture
- time of day
- frequency
- need privacy
- clean litter at all times
What else could you do to assess a urinary patient initially ?
- any concurrent medications or conditions that would cause polyuria?
- Baseline urinalysis, hydration status, vital signs
What can we record in terms of a patient urination?
- output
- appearance –> dipstick, USG
- micturition posture
- frequency
What urinary interventions can be done?
- express bladder (CARE of blockage)
- Catheterise
- Check bladder size
Why would you choose an indwelling catheter over an intermittent catheter?
There is a risk of infection and urethral trauma every time catheterisation is carried out
What nursing care is required for a patient with an indwelling catheter?
- Check and empty bag every 4 hours (want to do enough to prevent backflow, but not too often to reduce risk of infection)
- Check lines not kinked etc
- Check and prevent self mutilation
- Clean bag, line and prepuce/vulva at each emptying
- ensure bag is below patient
- ensure no leakage/ skin scalding
What can be done to protect the patient from skin scald?
Clipping perineum and applying a barrier cream
How can we evaluate the care of a urinary patient?
- Monitor urine output
- Urinalysis
- Monitor BW, BCS, MCS - if breaking down muscle will create more urea and put more pressure on kidneys to get rid of.
- Monitor hydration status
- Monitor fluid intake
- Pain levels and vital signs
What diet would you provide to a patient with urolithiasis?
diet with restricted minerals (specific minerals for specific crystal type)
What diet would you provide for a patient with chronic renal failure?
diet with restricted phosphate and protein
