Somatization definition

Manifestations:
- Disproportionate thoughts, feelings and behaviors associated with somatic manifestations
Illness Anxiety Disorder (Hypochondriasis):
What is it
Manifestations
when a client experiences constant thoughts about having a significant illness;
- Often client is misinterpreting their symptoms and may seek extensive treatment as a form of relieving their anxiety
“Scared of getting sick”
Manifestations:
- Constantly researching manifestations or diseases
- Obsessing about body functions & vital signs
- High anxiety r/t health status
Functional neurological symptom disorder (Conversion disorder):
What is it
Manifestations
Client may experience motor weakness of:
- paralysis,
- tremors
- reduced tactile, visual and auditory sensations
“Brain is not damaged, but it’s not working properly”
Manifestations:
- Symptoms worsen during acute stress
- Neurologic: blindness, paralysis, inability to swallow
Factitious disorder:

when the client falsifies their symptoms to themselves or others,even when there is no external reward for doing so
Dissociative disorders:

Positive: depersonalization, division of identity, derealization
Negative: Lack of control or access to mental function (e.g. amnesia)
Depersonalization/derealization disorder:
What is it?
When the client experiences a detachment from their surroundings.
- The client may describe feeling like they are floating out of their body or that they are in a dreamlike state
- the client is still able to test reality
Dissociative amnesia:
What is it?
the client being unable to recall events related to their history and is not consistent with normal forgetting
Dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality disorder:
What is it
When is it diagnosed?
Manifestations
Involves sudden and temporary changes in consciousness, behavior, and identity.
- Dissociative identity disorder becomes a diagnosis when a client experiences a disruption of identity characterized by two or more distinct personality states
Manifestations:
- Recurrent episodes outside client’s control
- Changes in perception, invasion into their conscious functioning or changes to sense of self.
