Warning signs of Eating Disorders
- Unexplained weight loss or gain
- Lying about food/eating
- Secret eating/binging
- Excessive exercising
- Pre-occupation with weight & body image
- Fear of fat
Anorexia Nervosa (AN):
What is it?
Clinical manifestations
Self-induced starvation
- Very thin
- Self conscious on weight
Manifestations:
- Thin, emaciated appearance
- Hypotension, bradycardia, dysrhythmias
- Hypothermia
- Dehydrated
- Peripheral Edema
Bulimia Nervosa (BN):
What is it?
Clinical manifestation
Binge eating followed by purging (vomiting)
Clinical Manifestations:
- Can have normal weight
- GI disturbances
- Lab abnormalities:
- Parotid gland enlargement / “Chipmunk cheeks”
- Dental issues
- Russell’s sign: callouses/scars on knuckles

What is it
Characterized by
Clinical Manifestations
Repeated rapid consumption of large amounts of food, unrelated to hunger
Characterized:
- Eating within 2 hour period of an amount of food larger than what most people would eat
- Lack of control of overeating during episode
Manifestations:
- Normal to overweight (obesity, diabetes possible)
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Dental caries
- GI disturbances
- HTN
- Heart disease
Refeeding syndrome:
Can’t “fatten” an anorexic patient up too quickly
- Huge fluid shift, electrolyte imbalance which causes cardiac condition = death
- They must have a very calculated food plan to reintroduce new food
