Modes of communication
Verbal - Oral communications, telephone
Nonverbal - body language, facial gestures, eye contact
Electronic - email, texting, social media, video conference
Written - Letter, electronic communication, computer post
Communication styles
Passive - Pattern to avoid conflict, express feelings or opinion, or standing up for themselves
Assertive - Advocate for their opinions, rights and need w/out violating others’ right
Aggressive - Expression that’s verbally–sometimes physically–abusive; tends to blame receiver
Passive-Aggressive - Appears passive on surface, acts our anger in subtle, indirect way
What is Therapeutic Communication?
Form of communication: Nurses use listening skills and empathy, and desire to build professional relationship to provide patient-centered care
