What is Western Medicine?
- Biomedical system
- Professional HCPs with formal education + training - Values self-reliance, individualism, aggressive action
What is Complimentary Medicine vs. Alternative Medicine?
Complimentary Medicine - Treatment done in CONJUNCTION with western medical treatment
ex: cancer patient receives chemo, radiation AND acupuncture
Alternative Medicine - Treatment done INSTEAD of western medical treatment
ex: cancer patient DENIES chemo, radiation chooses acupuncture
- Neither should be confused with holistic healthcare
Define the Concept of Holism and the Holistic Approach
Holism - emphasizes need to change lifestyle behaviors to decrease vulnerability to illness; emphasizes the relationships among all living things
Holistic Approach - Expand the patient encounter to include methods of enhancing the person’s resistance to the illness (ex: rest, fluids, nutrition);
List the healing modalities
Mind-body interventions:
Yoga, spirituality, relaxation
Alternative medical systems:
Homeopathy, naturopathy, Ayurveda
Manipulative and body-based methods:
Massage, chiropractic, osteopathy
Biologically based therapies:
Diets, herbals, vitamins
Energy therapies:
Reiki, magnets, Qigong

Nursing Implication of CAM
Protect - Protect them against dangerous practices
Permit- Permit HARMLESS practices
Promote and use - Promote and use practices that are safe and effective
- Include CAM in assessment
- Encourage patient to check with HCP before taking herbals
- Do not judge or show disapproval
