Define Pain
An unpleasant sensory or emotional experience associated with, or resembling what’s associated with tissue damage
Types of pain
Acute vs Chronic
-Acute: Fast onset, < 6 months
-Chronic: Long duration, >6 months
Nociceptive vs Neuropathic
- Nociceptive: Surgical, fracture (bodily tissue)
- Neuropathic: Nerve pain (solely nerves)
Cancer
- Pain tumor on body part
Age-related
What is PQRST?
Precipitating Cause: “What were you doing when the pain started
Quality: “Describe what the pain feels like?”
Region: “Show me the location when you are experiencing pain”
Severity: 0-10, how would you rate your pain
Timing: When did your pain first begin? Have you experienced this pain before?
