nucleic acids Flashcards
what are nucleotides?
they are the monomers for nucleic acids.
they contain three basic components:
-pentose sugar
-nitrogenous base
-phosphate group
what are the complementary base pairs?
DNA:
C and G
A and T
RNA:
C and G
A and U
what did watson and crick do?
they discovered the structure of DNA in 1953. they used previous experiments and trial and error. they developed a model that showed that DNA is a double helix structure, with anti-parallel strands.
what is the difference between the structure of DNA, and RNA?
the difference is on carbon 2, and RNA has OH, and DNA has only H
how many hydrogen bonds are between C and G?

what is the process of DNA replication? messsolson and stahl
- bacteria is grown in a culture of N15. the bacteria takes on its environment, to form its DNA
- the DNA is extracted from the bacteria, and centrifuged showing 100% N15 bases.
- the DNA is then put in a N14 solution, for 20 minutes.
- the new N14 babes attach to either parent strand of the N15.
- this brings about 50% N14, and N15.
- during the second replication the DNA, is again put in the N14 culture, where the four strands unzip and become parent strands.
- 2 fully N14 double strands are formed and 2 double strands of N14, and N15 are formed.
- again, the DNA is centrifuged and it 75% N14, and 25% N15.
what is the method of DNA replication?
semi-conservative replication
