Nuclear Flashcards
What is the atomic number?
number of protons in a atom
What is an isotope?
same protons different number of nuetrons and differnt atomic mass
What are the 5 types of radiation decay?
Alpha decay, beta decay, gamma decay, electron capture, positron emissions
What is gamma decay?
reduction of nucleus energy, by emission of gamma ray
What is alpha decay?
reduction of nucleus size by emission of alpha particle
What is beta decay?
Neutron spontaneously splits ejecting an electron and leaving behind a proton
If the arrow goes straight up what is it?
Beta emission
If the arrow goes diagon down?
Alpha emission
What are the two main methods of attraction?
Excitiation and ionisation?
What slows down and stops just Alplha?
Few cm of air or skin
What is the protection factor?
Incident intensity/transmitted intensity
What is the three types of inoisation?
Photo electric effect, pair production, compton
Whats the binding energy?
The weight difference of the sum of the parts of neutrons and protons. missing mass
what things in ALARP are needed?
Time distance and shield
