NSCV/IMO/MARPOL Requirments Flashcards
When do we need Cladding for hot surfaces
220 degs and over
What are 5 things required by NSCV for monitoring the engine room
1: Engine lubricating oil pressure
2: Engine gearbox lubricating oil pressure
3: Charging rate of generator or state of battery charge
4: Engine jacket cooling water outlet temperature
5: Rotational speed (in the case of propulsion machinery)
Note: in addition to the above instrumentation “clause 6.7.7 requires a rudder position indicator for certain vessels”
Identify the starting arrangement requirements under NSCV for both reversible and non-reversible engine’s.
Primary means, air or battery for starting, have sufficient capacity without recharging to provide
1: Six (6) consecutive starts for each non-reversible engine
2: Twelve (12) consecutive starts for reversible engine
Oily water separator (OWS) requirements
MARPOL
MARPOL approved system
Port state control must be followed first.
. Vessel must be under way and enroute
. Content of the effluent must be less then 15PPM
. Equipment must be certified and operational
. Vessel must have an oil discharge monitor and control system and oil filtering equipment
. Recording the discharge in the oil records book and log book
Sewage discharge requirements
MARPOL MARPOL approved system Comminuted and disinfected sewage Discharge over 3 nm from nearest land Follow the port state control guidelines Holding tank Not less then 4 knots
No MARPOL system Non comminuted and disinfected sewage More then 12 nm from nearest land Not less then 4 knots Follow Port state control guidelines
Sulphur content of fuel oil
Not to exceed 0.5%
Incinerator requirements
MARPOL approved

What is SOPEP
Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan
A step by step procedure to follow in case of oil pollution incident
What is the MLC
Maritime Labor convention It deals with things like a work place agreement wood, ie: Minimum age training and qualifications Wages Hours of work and rest
What is an SMS?
Safety Management System, is a systematic approach to managing safety.
Your vessel’s SMS should be based on a risk assessment of your operations. It should describe how safety, maintenance and operation is managed on your vessel
The owner, operator, master, and crew of each vessel should all be involved in carrying out the risk assessment and in developing, reviewing and updating the safety management system.
What are SDS’s?
Safety Data Sheets are;
documents that list information relating to occupational safety and health for the use of various substances and products. SDSs are a widely used system for cataloging information on chemicals, chemical compounds, and chemical mixtures
Must be less then 5 years old
What is the IMDG?
International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code,
One of the primary regulations is the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. If you want to ship dangerous goods safely, understanding the IMDG Code is crucial. The IMDG Code lays out a collection of regulations to ensure hazardous materials are transported via safe maritime practices.
What is the IMO definition of a Confined Space?
IMO definition,
Enclosed space means a space which has any of the following;
1. Limited openings for entry and exit
2. Inadequate ventilation
3. Is not designed for continuous worker occupancy
Safe Work Australia,
An enclosed or partially enclosed space that;
1. Is not designed or intended to be occupied by a
person
2. Is, or is designed or intended to be, at normal
atmospheric pressure while any person is in the
space
3. Is or is likely to be a risk to health and safety from;
. An atmosphere that dose not have a safe oxygen
level
. Contaminants, including airborne gases, vapours
and dust, that cause injury from fire or explosion
. Harmful concentrations of any airborne
contaminants
. Engulfment
What is the IMO?
The International Maritime Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations which is responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping and to prevent pollution from ships
