NSAIDs Flashcards
What are the three primary medical reasons NSAIDs are used in animals?
- Analgesia
- Anti-inflammatory
- Anti-pyretic
What are the risks of administering NSAIDs and Glucocorticoids simultaneously?
Increase likelihood of side effects, esp. GI signs.
Most common side effects of NSAIDs in the dog
GI Effects:
Anorexia, V/D, gastritis, enteriti, gastric ulcers/erosions.
What organ system is of most concern when giving an NSAID to an adult cat?
Kidney
What are the two types of liver toxicity caused by NSAIDs?
Intrinsic: dose dependent: dog gets into pill bottle
Idiosyncratic: we don’t know why
Pros and Cons of using Aspirin for chronic pain in dogs:
Pros:
Inexpensive, readily available
Cons:
Incr. risk of Gi irritation/ulceration
Why choose an NSAID over a corticosteroid for post-op pain control?
Fewer side effects, do not affect immune system
How do NSAIDs work?
Inhibit cyclooxygenase
Newer = cox 2 selective but selectivity is dose dependent and all are non-selective at higher doses.
What is grapiprant?
Galliprant
OA drug, highly selective EP4 receptor (Not COX inhibitor)
