Background

A

Airway device that is a soft rubber tube that enters the nostrils and extends to the back of the throat sitting just below base of tongue.
Advantages:
It can be rapidly inserted.
Able to be used in patients with a gag reflex, damage to oral cavity or trismus.
Suctioning can be performed through it.
Disadvantages:
Small diameter.
Can cause bleeding.
Can kink due to soft plastic construction.

Indications

A

When patient needs airway support but has trismus, damage to oral cavity or a gag reflex.

Contraindications

A

Nasal trauma, or extensive maxillofacial trauma.

Complications

A

Epistaxis.
Ulceration.
Stimulation of gag reflex.
Sinusitis.

Procedure

A
  1. Select size of NPA (nostril to ear lobe)
  2. Lubricate NPA.
  3. Insert NPA without excessive force. If minor resistance, rotate and try again.
  4. If failed insertion, attempt other nostril.
  5. Document application.
