Background
A
Airway device that is a soft rubber tube that enters the nostrils and extends to the back of the throat sitting just below base of tongue.
Advantages:
It can be rapidly inserted.
Able to be used in patients with a gag reflex, damage to oral cavity or trismus.
Suctioning can be performed through it.
Disadvantages:
Small diameter.
Can cause bleeding.
Can kink due to soft plastic construction.

Indications
A
When patient needs airway support but has trismus, damage to oral cavity or a gag reflex.

Contraindications
A
Nasal trauma, or extensive maxillofacial trauma.

Cautions
A
None.

Complications
A
Epistaxis.
Ulceration.
Stimulation of gag reflex.
Sinusitis.

Procedure
A
- Select size of NPA (nostril to ear lobe)
- Lubricate NPA.
- Insert NPA without excessive force. If minor resistance, rotate and try again.
- If failed insertion, attempt other nostril.
- Document application.
