November 19 - Alkene Reactivity Flashcards
1,2-hydride shift
When a hydride ion moves from one carbon to an adjacent carbon
An H- hydride ion is negatively charged because it has gained an extra electron (whereas H+ has lost it)
Hydration
The addition of water to a molecule
How is a racemic mixture formed?
When a reactant with no asymmetric centers reacts forming a product with one asymmetric center, the resulting mixture will always be racemic
Where will the hydrogen go in a terminal alkyne electrophilic addition reaction?
The hydrogen from the nucleophile will bond to the sp carbon that is bonded to the hydrogen
6.13 p.204
Enol
C=C bond with an OH group bonded to one of the sp2 carbons
What happens when you add water to an alkyne?
Produces an enol, which then rearranges into a ketone
The first reaction is catalyzed by an acid
6.14 p. 205
Keto-enol tautomers
A ketone and its corresponding enol
6.14 p. 206
Tautomers
Constitutional isomers that are in rapid equilibrium
Enol interconversion/tautomerization
Interconversion of tautomers
