Describe the procedure for correcting a chart up to date, once the weekly notices have been received.
- Check the publications list for charts affected
- Locate the chart correction in section II
- Check the chart edition onboard is the latest and that the last small correction has been done.
- Do the correction on the chart (with tracing aid if available)
- Record the small correction at the bottom of the chart.
- Record the correction in the correction log
How long do temporary NTMs typically last for?
3-6 months
How often are Cumulative lists of NTMs published, and what are they used for?
Every 6 months in January and July, to identify outstanding NTMs and to provide an audit trail for chart and publication corrections.
Why are preliminary notices published?
They are used to give advanced notice of changes affecting navigation that will take place soon.

What are Notices to Mariners?
Advise seafarers of important changes to charts and publications. They contain all corrections, alterations and amendments for the UKHO’s charts and publications and are published in three different formats : weekly, annually and cumulatively.
List 5 chart correcting actions
- AMEND existing information (e.g. light characteristics changed)
- INSERT new information (e.g. a new buoy)
- SUBSTITUTE one feature for another in the same position (e.g. changed depth)
- MOVE a feature (e.g. buoy repositioned)
- DELETE feature (e.g. wreck that has been permanently removed)
