Gyrocompass Flashcards
1
Q
Summarise how a free gyroscope is made into a gyrocompass.
A
It is gravity controlled to make it North seeking. Then damped to settle on the meridian.
2
Q
What gyro error occurs due to the vessel’s motion over the earths surface, how is it corrected?
A
Steaming error- Course/latitude/speed error.
Input of latitude and speed for automatic correction.
3
Q
Name 3 ways to determine gyro error
A
Using transits, 3 bearing fix, rising and setting bearings of the sun.
4
Q
Name the advantages and disadvantages of a Gyrocompass
A
- Can be place almost anywhere there is space.
- Repeaters are easily connected.
- It can interface with equipment such as autopilot, stabilisers, Radar, ARPA
- It is more accurate than magnetic compass.
- It gives a steady reading with far less movement in a seaway.
- Reliant on power source, may take time to resettle after power failure.
- Prone to cumulative errors if subjected to high speed manoeuvring.
- Incorrect readings may not be immediately obvious.
