Walkers should consider how they can reduce the risk of infection and reduce the chance of it spreading between dogs. In order to prevent spreading any infectious disease, dog walkers should know about the signs of infection, disease and illness in dogs. Dogs showing signs of infection or disease should not be walked or socialised with other dogs. Kennel cough is an example of an infectious disease.

Unless a veterinary surgeon has given a certified exemption, walkers should check that all dogs in their care have been vaccinated, wormed and treated for fleas.

When a walker is walking a group of dogs they should make sure they are complying with local authority requirements at all times. The dogs should all be reliably under control by the dog walker at all times.
