Note Flashcards - Dog Welfare and Behaviour - Providing Exercise
Dog Welfare and Behaviour - Providing Exercise:
Note #1
A significant impact on the dog’s welfare can be the way equipment is used, the walker’s interactions with the dog and how the dog is walked. Equipment such as prongs, choke collars, spray or electric shocks should never be used on dogs. It causes fear, distress and anxiety. A dog walker should also not behave in any way that could cause anxiety, fear or distress in the dogs.
Dog Welfare and Behaviour - Providing Exercise:
Note #2
Unless the walker is suitably qualified, knowledgeable and experienced, they should not give any advice or conduct any behavioural modifications on the dog. The walker should have the owner’s permission if they wish to conduct anything of this nature.
Dog Welfare and Behaviour - Providing Exercise:
Note #3
Dog walkers should always give the dogs under their control their full attention.
Dog Welfare and Behaviour - Providing Exercise:
Note #4
Dogs should be able to be called back to the walker reliably and as soon as they are called, if permission is given for them to be off the lead. The dogs should be trained to walk calmly when on a lead. The lead should be loose but secure so that the dog doesn’t feel restrained but also can’t wriggle out of the lead and run off.
Dog Welfare and Behaviour - Providing Exercise:
Note #5
Unless with prior written consent stating otherwise, female dogs in season should be walked on their own on a lead in a quiet area.

Note #6
An adequate amount of fresh water should always be available for the dog to keep them hydrated.
