Nose & Paranasal Sinuses Flashcards
first 1/3rd of nasal mucosal lining?
stratified squamous epithelium with nasal hairs trapping large particles
posterior 2/3rd of nasal mucosal lining?
pseudo stratified columnar epithelium which consists of cilia
what is the nasal roof/walls floor?
cribriform plate
turbinates
hardplate
where does cartilage get its blood supply?
poor blood supply so gets it from overlying mucosa
what are turbinates?
bony scroll-like projections from lateral wall of nose that increase surface area for humidification
what opens underneath turbinates?
sinuses and nasolacrimal duct open underneath
what is the nasolacrimal duct and where does it open?
drainage pathway for lacrimal secretions (tears) which opens underneath the inferior turbinate
what are the three paranasal sinuses?
frontal
maxillary
sphenoid
ethmoid sinus structure?
anterior and posterior ethmoids split by ground lamella
where do anterior and posterior ethmoids drain?
anterior into the middle meatus and posterior into superior meatus
what is the clinical relevance of the ethmoids?
paper thin bone between ethmoids and orbit
where is sphenoid sinus and where does it drain?
right at back behind eyes and drains into the sphenoethmoidal recess
what runs above, behind and to side of sphenoid sinus?
optic nerve above
ICA side
pituitary posterior
what is the external bloody supply to nose?
sphenopalatine artery (via maxillary)
what is the internal bloody supply to nose?
anterior and posterior ethmoidal artery (via ophthalmic)
