Rhetorical Device
the tool a writer uses to develop a rhetorical strategy
Coherence
The trait that creates a logical orderly pattern that is easy to understand
What are the two ways to create Essay Coherence
Repetition and parallelism
What does coherence do?
A.) adds emphasis to repeated words
B.) adds emphasis to the ideas after the repeated words
Or
C.) sets up a pattern that often emphasizes the idea of the sentence that brakes the pattern
Simples sentence
a sentence with one independent clauses
Compound sentence
a sentence with two independent clauses
Complex sentence
a sentence with one independent clause and one dependent clause
Compound-complex sentence
a sentence with two independent clauses and a dependent clause
What are the four sentence structures
Simple, compound, compound-complex, and complex sentence
What are the four sentence types
Interrogative sentence (a sentence that asks a question) Imperative sentence (a sentence that gives a command) Exclamatory sentence (a sentence that shows excitement) Declarative sentence (check)(a sentence that makes a statement)
Long sentence
A sign of graceful writing. They are used when the sentence addresses beauty.
Subordination
The process of giving one idea less emphasis than another idea in a sentence.
Three things to know about subordination
- ) the sentence contains a main clause connected to a dependent clause.
- ) the dependent clause contains a conjunction. (when, because after, etc…)
- ) the important ideas always go in the main clause and the lesser ideas go in the subordinate clause
Coordination
Connects independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS). Both sides of the conjunction are of equal value.
Short sentence/ sentence fragment
Don’t call a fragment a short sentence. After a long sentence, it creates emphasis on the short sentence or fragment.Sometimes it creates drama or tention
