authoritarianism
political system rejecting participation, competition, liberty, rule of law, separation of powers and democratic voting
nondemocratic regime
political regime is controlled by a small group of individuals who exercise power over the state without being constutionally responsible to the public
totalitarianism
form of nondemocratic rule with a highly centralized state whose regime has a welldefined ideology and seeks to transform and fuse the institutions of state, society and the economy
resource trap
existence of natural resources is a barrier to modernization and democracy
wealth is concentrated in the hands of those in power
populism
view that elites and established institutions do not fully represent the will of the people, that a new movement led by a charismatic leader can usher in new order
