Non-repudiation Flashcards
Security+
What does non-repudiation mean?
You can’t deny what you’ve said; there’s no taking it back.
How does signing a contract provide non-repudiation?
Your signature adds proof that you agreed to the contract, which others can verify.
How does non-repudiation relate to cryptography?
It provides proof of integrity and proof of origin with high assurance of authenticity.
What is proof of integrity?
It verifies that data does not change and remains accurate and consistent.
How is data represented in cryptography to ensure integrity?
Using a hash, which is a short string of text that acts as a message digest or fingerprint.
What happens if data changes in relation to its hash?
If the data changes, the hash changes as well.
Does hashing associate data with an individual?
No, hashing only indicates if the data has changed, not who changed it.
How does changing one character in a file affect its hash?
The hash will change, indicating that the data integrity has been compromised.
What is the purpose of proof of origin?
To prove that the message was not changed and to authenticate the source of the message.
How can you ensure a signature is authentic?
By signing with a private key; only the owner can sign, making it non-repudiable.
How is a signature verified in cryptography?
By using the public key; any change to the message will invalidate the signature.
