Non-Mendelian genetics Flashcards
What is the notation used in Morgans experiments?
We name these alleles based on the mutation being observed. The mutation gets a lower case letter and the wild type uses the same lower case letter with a + superscript.
What were Morgan’s big contributions?
genes are on chromosomes
sex-linkage
Crossing over of chromosomes
What is a sex-linked trait?
Sex-linked traits are found on the X chromosome, in organisms that use X and Y chromosomes.
The Y chromosome dictates “______.”
male
What disorders are recessive and carried on the X chromosome?
Color blindness
Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Hemophilia
If a female is heterozygous for a particular gene located on the X chromosome, she will be a ________ for that character.
mosaic
What are linked genes?
Genes located on the same chromosome that tend to be inherited together are called linked genes. They do not separate from each other if no crossing-over occurs between them.
The closer genes are to each other on the same chromosome, the _______ likely they are to become separated during crossing over, resulting in more parental phenotypes than predicted.
less
The farther apart two genes are:
The _______ the probability that a crossover will occur between them;
The _______ the recombination frequency.
higher
higher
What is a linkage map?
a genetic map of a chromosome based on recombination frequencies
What are the four types of changes to chromosomal structure?
Deletion
Duplication
Translocation
Inversion
What is nondisjunction?
When entire chromosomes can end up in the wrong cell during meiosis.
What is aneuploidy? What causes it?
Caused by nondisjunction. The cells that result will have either one extra or one too few chromosomes. When these cells participate in fertilization, we call the resulting wrong number of chromosomes aneuploidy.
What are trisomic and monosomic zygotes?
A trisomic zygote has three copies of a particular chromosome
A monosomic zygote has only one copy of a particular chromosome
What is polyploidy? Is it common or rare?
a condition in which an organism has more than two complete sets of chromosomes. It is common in plants, but extremely rare in animals.
